2. To refrain from Stealing
3. To refrain from Sexual Misconduct
4. To refrain from Lying
5. To refrain from taking Alcohol and Intoxicating Drugs

8. To abstain from indulging in songs/music and shows as well as the use of ornaments, perfume and cosmetics.

Taking and Keeping the 8 precepts is a special practice of Moral Discipline that is performed with Bodhicitta Motivation. The practice starts with vow taking before the Buddha lead by Master.
The essence of the practice is to take 8 precepts and to take them purely for a period of 24 hours. We receive many great benefits from practising moral discipline in this way. It helps us to solve the problems of this life by avoiding the causes of sufffering, and it creates the cause for us to take fortunate rebirth in future lives and thereby protects us from the suffering of lower rebirth.

In particular, because it is performed with Bodhicitta motivation, this practice is very powerful for purifying negative karma. It accumulates a vast collection of merits and creates the cause for us to attain the unsurpassed happiness of Enlightenment.

An explanation of the practice.
When we take the 8 precepts, we explicitly promise to abstain for 24-hours from these 8 actions/precepts.*

Taking and keeping these 8 precepts is a special purification practice.

Sadhu!

Maha Sadhu to Sis Margaret Ong-Tan for the 8 precepts article.
